World Cup update: Happily for me, Spain has won its first two games against Ukraine and Tunisia, and are leading their group. They play Saudi Arabia Friday. Go Spain! (Swiss players at left, AP photo).
Aphid world: Most of my aphids have now succumbed to the soapy water treatment. Bonus, the cilantro will be clean to eat as soon as I rinse the soap off.
Hopeful world: I sure hope folks and their governments cut down soon on greenhouse gas emissions. Al Gore scared the be-jeezus out of me in his movie "An Inconvenient Truth" on the weekend. He described the inertia that keeps so many of us driving SUVs etc as a natural human trait - we don't want to take action until we're forced to by obvious negative consequences. But sometimes those consequences come too late. I don't want to be anti-aphid here, but pretty soon humans won't be able to stand the heat, storms, flooding, droughts. Only the aphids and cockroaches, and maybe the amazing Spanish soccer team, will survive. Unless! I predict that some moderate consequences will need to happen before we collectively develop the will. But as Al said, if they develop too gradually, no one will notice.
Typical conversation in 50 years:
Older man: "I remember when I was young, the temperature never went above 40 degrees in the summer...and we didn't have those new fangled vapour wrap air conditioning suits we have now... we used to be able to hug and kiss each other, not just email x's and o's through our mental telepathy circuits."
Granddaughter: "Really Grandpa, you must have been hot. What's a kiss?"
A world of insects: Soon after seeing a giant bug on a suburban side walk last week, I read in the insightful Ottawa Citizen about this very bug: the giant water bug. The one I saw was at least 2.5" long and very scary. Maybe it'll survive global warming too.
Mommy Dearest's world: I'm sure Lesley has made huge progress in her garden. It's time for an update Lesley.
